Anybody remember this?

This is an old picture of a place I remember at some location in West Seattle as a kid. Anybody else remember where this was at?

  3. I'm real slow...my guess, since Cheryl says she knows but won't spill the beans, is the park behind what used to be a Wigwam store in White Center where at one time there was an old, real WWII fighter plane.

  4. That sounds right to me, Steve. Although I was thinking of the Chubby and Tubby store, but now that you mention it, I do kind remember some kind of Wigwam store somewhere. I mostly remember the "space aged" playground, and I believe there was a library right over there too.

  6. Yes, there is a library at the corner of the park; could be wrong about WigWam but maybe it changed to Chubby & Tubby out of political correctness.
    Wigwam, the Wigwam Store,
Gotta buy more at the Wigwam Store,
    Wigwam!
(remembering the jingle should earn extra credit points)

  7. Okay, I just can't remember where the Wigwam was, but I know there was such a place...and yes, the rocket is, or was, in a park in white center...and yes, remembering the jingle for the wigwam is definitely worth extra credit!!! And last but not least, I wouldn't think Chubby and Tubby is any more politically correct than the Wigwam!!!

  8. I stand corrected; Wigwam and Chubby & Tubby were two different places; C & T apparently lasted into the last decade. There is a picture of the airplane from the park at this link, if it works (it worked for me):

The airplane still exists, on display at a museum.

  10. Chubby and Tubby is now a Walgreens. Good research, Steve! I can't believe I didn't find that. I'll keep looking for other interesting stuff. By the way, the old Cooper Elementary is now known as the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (but you probably knew that already) as they have opened up a new Cooper Elementary up on top of the hill.

  11. "Crossing guards and the safety patrol helped children cross streets. After a Cooper student had been hit and killed by a car on Delridge Way, a pedestrian overpass was built to the park and opened in April, 1960. First-graders led the school over the bridge after the ribbon-cutting ceremony. On less public occasions, alumni reported they liked to cross the bridge on the outside of the hand-rail and fence."

  12. I love this stuff! I would do this research full time if I didn't have to make a living.

    1. Really? Then you would be very interested in family history, right? Jay and I are working on that now...hopefully going to have something in print by the reunion.
